Burhanpur is a historically rich and culturally vibrant city located on the northern banks of the Tapti River in the southwestern region of Madhya Pradesh, close to the Maharashtra border. The city gained great prominence during the Mughal era, serving as a key administrative, military, and trading center in the Deccan region. It was an important stop on ancient trade routes, which helped it develop into a hub of commerce, especially for textiles and handicrafts. Burhanpur is deeply associated with the Mughal emperor Shah Jahan, as his beloved wife Mumtaz Mahal died here in 1631; her body was temporarily buried in Burhanpur before being moved to the Taj Mahal in Agra.
