An accident occurred late Saturday night when a 12-feet-tall Ganesh idol being transported fell due to potholes on the road. A young man, crushed under the idol, lost his life, sparking anger among locals over the city’s poor road conditions.
Youth from Khandwa crushed under idol
The incident occurred around 9 PM near Tulsi Mall on Lalbagh Road. The deceased was identified as Shashank Joshi (26), a resident of Khandwa. He had traveled to Burhanpur with members of the Hatkeshwar Ganesh Mandal to take the idol.
While walking alongside the vehicle, Shashank was crushed under the idol when it toppled. He was rushed to a private hospital, but doctors declared him dead.
Another youth accompanying Shashank fainted in shock after the incident and was also admitted to the hospital.
Blame on pothole-ridden roads
According to eyewitnesses, the idol was being transported from Samrat Maurya Art, Lalbagh, to Nai Awar Khandwa when it lost balance due to deep potholes. The mishap drew a large crowd, and police teams led by CSP Gaurav Patil reached the spot to manage the situation.
Hindu Mahasabha spokesperson Om Azad directly blamed the administration, demanding that the commissioner and mayor take immediate action to repair the city’s battered roads. Congress leader Ajay Singh Raghuwanshi echoed the sentiment, stating,
